-also Amapa put under French control

-this in turn results in Grao-Para seeing growing development centered around Belem

-as Portugal tries to take full advantage of its remaining lands

-faced with growing French encroachment on the Amazon basin, decides to make it accessible to all countries

-results in the US making a huge presence in the era

-India rubber craze sparked by rise of Telegraphy > Submarine cables, Velocipedes, which use them

-in 1860s, rubber uses spark upwards massively, inspires production in many places incl. Grao-Para

-massive amounts of slave labor occurs in this rising trade

-both of black and indigenous slaves

-canals, railroads created to bring out rubber

-due to import of slaves from Africa, France tries to cut it off through various slave raids, forces Portugal to look elsewhere France's Wars > Franco-Portuguese War (1871-2)

-slave trade from southern US, which replaces this, this only cut off by Liberty and Union War (1868-76)

-after ACW ends, Richmondite exiles leave, many to Grao-Para

-there's already been a pretty impressive amount of Southron settlement

-with Antillean War (1880-4) there's another massive barrage of southern settlement

-an exile Richmond Government established and essentially this governs itself

-however, Portuguese government becomes suspicious that they seek their own independence

-in 1889 Portugal sends an expedition to maintain order in area

-however, opposed by the Richmondite settlers

-result is declaration of independence by settlers

-they succeed against pretty feeble Portuguese forces

-sign an alliance with Empire of the German Nation in return for rubber trading

-with French Wars > Fifth French War (1892-5) there is very nearly an Anglo-French invasion

-but France doesn't want expansion of British influence, and Portugal is defended

-however, postwar there is a massive controversy

-brutal rubber trade, complete with chopped hands

-US organizes campaign against this, culminates in International Interventions > Intervention in Grao-Para (1897-8)

-Grao-Para internationalized, governed by Council of Administration under International Forum governance
